The Haiku Stairs in Oahu, Hawaii, have long attracted tourists who hike them illegally. Though previously open to hikers who obtained permits, the Haiku Stairs were fully closed to the public in 1987. Hikers on the Haiku stairs, otherwise known as Stairway to Heaven, on Oahu, Hawaii. A woman and her dog were rescued in September after falling 50 feet while hiking the Haiku Stairs trail. In October 2022, local outlet KHON2 reported 118 people had been rescued on the Haiku Stairs since 2010.

Read previewRescuers in Honolulu saved a 35-year-old woman who had fallen roughly 170 feet down the side of a mountain thanks to her dog, who barked incessantly and alerted passersby. The Honolulu Fire Department said in a statement that a group of hikers called 911 on January 15 to report a barking dog on a steep mountain slope, who was apparently without a handler. A rescuer rappelled some 20 feet down the slope and airlifted the dog to safety — but the pilot noticed an object roughly 70 feet below where the dog has been found. They said the Honolulu Police Department performed a wellness check at the owner's address, but found no one home. Rescuers put her on a stretcher and airlifted her off the mountain and brought her to the hospital.

Maui Police removed a fifth individual from the Lahaina fire missing list as recently as October. Officers tasked with finding missing persons from the inferno, or, the remains of Lahaina’s missing, are still searching the burn zone. Details concerning the three remaining people on the Lahaina fire credible missing list have not been previously reported. “Robert Owens, he was known to frequent Lahaina,” Landsiedel said. The officers within MINT carry a triple burden: coordinating Lahaina missing persons investigations, tracking identification efforts, and, ultimately, notifying family members of the dead.
